Self-hosting installation fails because Docker is missing

OpenSuryansuDasopened 4d ago

Hi Puter Team, I'm trying to self-host Puter on my MacBook Air using the installation command provided on the official website:

curl -fsSL https://puter.com/selfhost | sh

However, the installation stops with the following error:

[puter-install] checking dependencies
[puter-install] missing required command: docker

Environment:

  • OS: macOS
  • Device: MacBook Air (Apple Silicon, M4)
  • Installation method: Official self-hosting installation script

Expected Behavior:

The installer should clearly explain how to install Docker or provide instructions for resolving this dependency.

Actual Behavior:

The installer exits because Docker is not installed or is not available in the system PATH.

Question:

Could you please provide the recommended Docker setup instructions for macOS Apple Silicon users and clarify whether Docker Desktop is required?

Thank you!

Hi, I feel having our shell script download docker might be a bit intrusive. However we will improve docs around self hosting to help with this.

As for your question @SuryansuDas I use docker with docker desktop. You don't need docker desktop, but nice GUI to manage your containers.

You can also use podman, which some of the team here does use with success, but I personally can't comment.
