#3362

feat(stream): skip the view rebuild on server-state-only syncs

Opens0up4200wants to merge intofrom

Description

This continues the work in #3349. It cuts the work that qui does on each sync tick when the torrent list did not change.

  • A sync that changes only the server state (speeds, free disk space, alternative speed mode) sends a delta with the new serverState and the rows and counts of the last frame. qui does not rebuild the view. A cross-instance view carries no server state, so it rebuilds as before. If the last rebuild failed, the next server-state tick rebuilds the view. If a rebuild is already queued for the view, the rebuild stays queued. A change of the subcategory mode still rebuilds, because it changes the category counts.
  • The cached sidebar counts stay valid through a server-state-only sync. countsGen now moves only when torrents, categories, tags, or trackers change.
  • A new stream option, summary, returns the totals, stats, counts, and server state of a view, but no rows, and does not sort. The title bar speeds, the active task count, and the Dashboard use it. A cross-instance stream rejects it.
  • cachedCountsForRequest and calculateCountsFromTorrentsWithTrackers lose the tracker map parameter and the two return values that no caller reads after #3349.

In a server-state frame, cacheMetadata is built from the time of its sync. activeTaskCount is read again for each frame from its 10-second cache. instanceMeta is built again for each frame, because the connection status is part of the server state. The init frame of a stream now includes the counts, because the next tick can be minutes away when nothing changes.

Closes #3001

Breaking change

No breaking change.

Behaviour change

No behaviour change.

How has this been tested?

Rig: qBittorrent 5.2.4 with 50,000 torrents and DHT off, behind a request-logging proxy, with a fake tracker on 127.0.0.1. For each binary, qui started fresh with one SSE connection and two streams: the torrent table (limit 300) and the small stream (limit 1 on develop and #3349, summary on this PR). After a 150-second boot, the script ran three 120-second windows:

  • Idle: no change.
  • Server state: a call to transfer/toggleSpeedLimitsMode every 2 seconds, which changes only the server state.
  • Active: a change of the upload limit of 1,000 torrents every 2 seconds.

On this PR, the server-state window sent 52 frames for 56 sync ticks, and the idle window sent only heartbeats. The qui logs have no errors. Each stream gap over 4 seconds is an idle stretch with heartbeats only.

Performance

qui CPU per sync/maindata tick, from /proc CPU time over each window divided by the sync requests in the window. Revisions: develop 838dd5c3, #3349 cd5b85db, this PR 91d794a6. The measured binary of this PR was built before two changes with no effect on behavior: a method moved in client.go, and a one-line rewrite of SummaryRequested.

Windowdevelop#3349this PR
Idle573 ms50 ms12 ms
Server state only550 ms484 ms63 ms
1,000 torrents change550 ms429 ms365 ms

Requests to qBittorrent per window are the same as on #3349: only sync/maindata (54 to 58) and no torrents/info. Develop also sent 2 whole-library torrents/info requests per window.

Conclusion: a server-state-only tick costs 87% less CPU than on #3349. The active window ran once per binary, so its 15% drop can be noise. The server-state path adds one instance lookup per frame, which the rebuild path already did.

📝 Walkthrough

The stream API now supports summary subscriptions that return totals and statistics without torrent rows. The SSE manager can emit server-state-only deltas for single-instance groups. Sync handling advances the counts generation only when changes extend beyond server state. Count calculation and caching use a counts-only return value, and frontend stream requests and API documentation include the summary option.

Speed updates can lag repeatedly when the task-count request stalls. Decouple that refresh from frame publication before merging unless the delay is explicitly accepted.

[Medium impact] The changes affect live torrent streams and aggregate readers for connected instances.

Fix failed-rebuild recovery and cross-instance subcategory updates before merging.
