[BUG] Folder-opening buttons launch web browser instead of Nautilus on Fedora GNOME Wayland

Bug Description

On Fedora Linux 44 with GNOME Wayland, Handy v0.9.8 opens local directories in the default web browser (Google Chrome) instead of the system's default file manager (GNOME Files / Nautilus).

This affects all three directory-opening buttons:

  • History → Open Recordings Folder
  • Settings → About → App Data Directory → Open
  • Settings → About → Log Directory → Open

Previously, these buttons launched Firefox when Firefox was installed as the default browser. After Firefox was removed, they started launching Google Chrome instead.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Launch Handy v0.9.8 on Fedora GNOME Wayland.
  2. Navigate to History and click Open Recordings Folder.
  3. Observe that the directory opens in Google Chrome rather than Nautilus.
  4. Navigate to Settings → About.
  5. Click Open beside App Data Directory or Log Directory.
  6. Observe the same behavior.

Expected Behavior

All directory-opening buttons should launch the specified directories in the system's default file manager, GNOME Files (Nautilus).

Actual Behavior

Handy launches the default web browser and opens the directory as a local file:// URL.

Example:

file:///home/<username>/.local/share/com.pais.handy/logs/

The directory path itself is correct, but the application used to open it is incorrect.

Troubleshooting Performed

1. Verified the default directory handler:

xdg-mime query default inode/directory

Output:

org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop

2. Tested the recordings directory with xdg-open:

xdg-open "$HOME/.local/share/com.pais.handy/recordings"

Result: Opens correctly in Nautilus.

3. Tested using GIO:

gio open "$HOME/.local/share/com.pais.handy/recordings"

Result: Opens correctly in Nautilus.

4. Tested using a file URL:

xdg-open "file://$HOME/.local/share/com.pais.handy/recordings"

Result: Opens correctly in Nautilus.

All three independent tests successfully open GNOME Files.

The problem appears specific to how Handy requests directory opening or interacts with the Linux desktop environment, rather than a system-wide directory MIME association issue.

System Information

App Version:

v0.9.8

Operating System:

Fedora Linux 44 Workstation (x86_64)

Desktop: GNOME 50.5

Display Server: Wayland (Mutter)

CPU:

AMD Ryzen AI 7 350

GPU:

AMD Radeon 860M Graphics (integrated)

Mesa RADV 26.2.4

Logs

Reviewed the available Handy application log.

No explicit errors related to folder opening, directory launching, or file-manager invocation were found. The log primarily contains normal transcription activity and unrelated Wayland clipboard warnings.

The supplied log ends at 18:39:43 on October 16, so it does not establish the behavior of the later folder-opening attempts.

Additional evidence:

  • Screenshot of Handy v0.9.8 showing the App Data Directory and Log Directory buttons.
  • All three folder-opening actions reproduce the same behavior.
  • The browser receives the correct local directory URL.

This may be related to Handy's directory-opening implementation or the way its application framework delegates local filesystem paths to the desktop environment.

Hi @cjpais, I'd like to pick this up. I'll start by reproducing the issue and checking why Handy opens these folders in a browser when the terminal commands open Nautilus.

I'll keep the fix to the three folder buttons, respect the default file manager, and add tests where possible. Could you assign this to me if nobody else is working on it?
