Searched for libssl and openssl. The closest match is #750: the same kind of missing .deb dependency, for libgtk-layer-shell0.
Bug Description
The handy binary links libssl.so.3 and libcrypto.so.3, but the .deb doesn't list the package that provides them.
Ubuntu 26.10 ships only OpenSSL 4 (libssl4), so apt installs Handy without errors and then Handy fails to start, every time.
The .deb's Depends line:
Depends: libgtk-layer-shell0, libopenblas0, libappindicator3-1, libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0, libgtk-3-0Expected: either installing the .deb brings in OpenSSL 3, or the binary doesn't need it.
Workaround: sudo apt install libssl3t64, which is still in the 26.10 archive.
Guess at a fix: add libssl3t64 | libssl3 to the .deb dependencies, or link OpenSSL statically.
Done when: on a clean Ubuntu 26.10, apt install ./Handy_<version>_amd64.deb followed by handy --version runs.
Reproduction
docker run --rm ubuntu:26.10 bash -c '
apt-get update -qq && apt-get install -y -qq curl ca-certificates >/dev/null
curl -fsSLO https://github.com/cjpais/Handy/releases/download/v0.9.8/Handy_0.9.8_amd64.deb
DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get install -y -qq ./Handy_0.9.8_amd64.deb >/dev/null 2>&1
ldd /usr/bin/handy | grep "not found"
handy --version'Output:
libssl.so.3 => not found
libcrypto.so.3 => not found
handy: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directorySystem Information
App Version: 0.9.8 (Handy_0.9.8_amd64.deb)
Operating System: Ubuntu 26.10
CPU: 12th Gen Intel Core i3-1215U
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics (Alder Lake-UP3 GT1)
Logs
Handy exits before it writes a log. The loader error above is the only output.
Dear @jd-solanki thanks for the help. This works to install the app. But the keyboard shortcut doesn't start the app. How do you manage this? I have also a plain new install of Gnome Ubuntu 26.10. Thanks for the help.
