Describe the issue
After committing deleted assets, GitButler continued showing them as uncommitted deletions. Attempting to commit them again failed with “No effective changes.” Restarting GitButler did not clear them.
This affected 56 files in one repository and 16 in another.
We verified that the files were absent from both HEAD and disk but still present in the Git index. Running git restore --staged -- cleared the ghost entries without changing files or commits.
Expected: files absent from both HEAD and disk should not appear as uncommitted deletions.
How to reproduce (Optional)
- Open a repository in GitButler’s workspace.
- Stage a tracked image or SVG file using an external Git client.
- Delete that file from disk.
- Commit the deletion through GitButler.
- Observe that GitButler still lists the file as an uncommitted deletion.
- Try committing the remaining deletion again.
- GitButler reports “No effective changes.”
- Close and reopen GitButler—the deletion remains listed.
Expected behavior (Optional)
Expected behavior
Once committed, deleted files should disappear from the uncommitted changes list. Files absent from both HEAD and the working directory should not remain as pending deletions.
Actual behavior and relevant output
GitButler CLI: but 0.22.3 OS: macOS
Failed to create commit Cause: No effective changes
GitButler continued reporting entries such as:
╭┄ zz [uncommitted] ┊ uk D public/favicon.svg ┊ pt D public/images/app-mockups/iphone-15/achievements-dark-portrait.webp
Read-only verification showed the favicon was already absent from both commits:
$ git show HEAD:public/favicon.svg fatal: path 'public/favicon.svg' does not exist in 'HEAD'
$ git show feature/sync-venue-permission-accepted:public/favicon.svg fatal: path 'public/favicon.svg' does not exist in 'feature/sync-venue-permission-accepted'
The same behavior affected 56 files in the Laravel repository and 16 files in the Flutter repository. For the Flutter repository, all 16 were confirmed absent from HEAD and disk but present in the index.
Workaround verified
git restore --staged --
Relevant log output (Optional)
