[Bug]: First tab in collapsed vertical tab strip has no top spacing and merges into the toolbar

Operating system

Linux

Version

Helium 0.19.4.1 (Chromium 155.0.8059.84), helium-browser-bin (AUR)

Have you tested that this is not an upstream issue or an issue with your configuration?

  • I have tried reproducing this issue in Chrome and it could not be reproduced there
  • I have tried reproducing this issue in ungoogled-chromium and it could not be reproduced there
  • I have tried reproducing this issue in Helium with a new and empty profile using --user-data-dir command line argument and it could not be reproduced there

Note: the bug does reproduce on a new, empty profile (--user-data-dir=<tmpdir> with only the vertical layout and collapsed vertical tabs enabled), so it is not caused by my configuration.

Description

In the vertical layout with the tab strip collapsed, the first tab has no top spacing. Its background touches the bottom of the toolbar.

The active tab's background is the same color as the toolbar, so the two merge into one shape. The tab looks like it hangs off the toolbar instead of sitting inside the tab strip.

How to Reproduce?

  1. Start Helium with an empty profile: helium-browser --user-data-dir=$(mktemp -d)
  2. In helium://settings/appearance, set Browser layout to Vertical.
  3. Collapse the vertical tab strip with the sidebar toggle button in the toolbar.
  4. Open any page, e.g. https://github.com/imputnet/helium.
  5. Look at the top of the tab strip, just below the toolbar.

Actual behavior

The active (first) tab sits directly against the bottom of the toolbar, with 0px between them. Both use the same color (#3E3E5F in the screenshot), so the top edge of the tab disappears into the toolbar.

The tab's left and right sides and its rounded bottom corners have spacing, but its top doesn't. The top looks cut off and attached to the toolbar.

Measured on a 1920×1080 screenshot at 1.6× scale: the toolbar's background runs straight into the tab's background, with no strip of the tab-strip color (#1E1E2E) between them.

Expected behavior

The first tab should have the same top spacing as the gaps between tabs and around the tab's sides, so it reads as a separate rounded item in the tab strip. Its top corners should be visible, like its bottom corners.
