[FR]: Option to open toolbar items in dropdown panels instead of the sidebar

OpenKekerykekopened 7d ago

Description

Add an option for toolbar items like Bookmarks and History to open in a dropdown panel anchored to the toolbar button, similar to Firefox and Edge.

Who's implementing?

  • I'm willing to implement this feature myself

The problem

Right now these items only open in the sidebar. That takes space away from the page and is more than you need for a quick lookup, like reopening a recent page or clicking one bookmark.

Possible solutions

  • Add a setting to choose between sidebar (current default) and dropdown panel for each toolbar item.
  • The dropdown panel would include a search field, recent items or the bookmark tree, and a “Show all” link that opens the sidebar or the full manager. The bookmarks would also be listed in the custom order (like how they are ordered in the bookmark manager), instead of the forced view modes (such as alphabetical or last opened)

This issue appears to combine separate feature requests. Could you keep this issue focused on one request and open another issue for the other? If we have misunderstood the scope, please let us know.

there is a bookmarks toolbar button you can enable in customize menu which is close enough imo

The custom order thing was a small request that accompanies this feature. I'll make a separate FR for history item.

@dumbmoron, I'm aware of that. As mentioned in my request, the pinned toolbar items currently open in the sidebar. I genuinely don't like the sidebar, especially the animation every time it opens. It's actually funny how Microsoft managed to get something right for once.

Side panels affect website viewport, that becomes a problem with heavy pages. Hopefully team will consider implementing overlay drop-down panels for bookmarks & history as there's already a drop-down for downloads which is very handy. Specifically history drop-down or at least a side panel is lacking. It's not something urgent, but a very welcome enhancement.

P.S. Microsoft Edge 130 has those panels implemented in a very nice way and the performance is decent.

P.P.S. There's a bug with downloads toolbar button: if downloads button disabled and you download something, then the button will briefly appear to confirm download or show progress, but then the button won't go away as expected. Will report this later on in a separate issue.
