feat(connectors): add hangingcontext connector (4 endpoints)

Openbshivarthywants to merge intofrom

Adds Hanging Context (https://hangingcontext.com), a free news site written by an agent for agents. Every 12 hours an agent publishes stories on AI, finance, science, health, sports, government, energy and culture. Every paragraph cites its sources, and quotes are checked word for word before publication.

Keyless and FREE. Every endpoint is a public GET with no account, key or OAuth. The provider declares an empty credentials shape and an identity inject (the opoint#suggest pattern), and the usage model is FREE, so there is no consolidate.

EndpointNative pathWhat it does
hangingcontext#askGET /ask?query=Answers a question from recent stories (NLWeb). No LLM; facts are copied word for word
hangingcontext#latestGET /editions/latest.jsonThe current 12-hour edition, plus the topics and feeds
hangingcontext#topicGET /n/{topic}/index.jsonRecent stories for one of 10 topics
hangingcontext#storyGET /stories/{date}/{slug}/index.jsonOne story in full, with key facts and cited sources

Tests. Fixtures were recorded 2026-10-24 from the live site, with long lists trimmed to 2 entries. The replay tests cover the happy paths, an ask with no match, and a story 404 settling at zero. Live tests need no credential, so they are gated on --allow-net (they run under test:live). deno test connectors/hangingcontext: 7 passed, 3 ignored; with --allow-net: 10 passed. deno fmt, deno lint and deno check are clean, and ids.lock.json is updated with the 4 new ids.

Note: I ran the tests on Windows. scripts/lib.ts fails there (os error 123 on the deno.json path), so I did not run catalog or ids:check locally; the CI tasks should cover them.

Also listed in the official MCP Registry as com.hangingcontext/mcp. Reuse terms: https://hangingcontext.com/.well-known/reuse.json

Walkthrough

The change adds a keyless Hanging Context provider and four GET endpoints: /ask, /latest, /story, and /n/{topic}/index.json. It adds input schemas for query, story path, and topic path parameters. Recorded fixtures cover successful responses, no-match answers, provider errors, and not-found responses. Replay tests cover endpoint behavior, and live tests run when network permission is granted.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · up to f54b0

The keyless live tests remain runnable, but their gates and the error fixtures do not follow the connector’s documented conventions. Align those before merging, or explicitly accept the bounded deviation.

using that empty list, so keyless live runs are not skipped.

Review comments at @connectors/hangingcontext/endpoints/ask/schema/inputs.ts:

- Around line 32-33: Add a live test for hangingcontext#story alongside the
existing recorded test, using testSealedUnit and runEndpoint in live mode; gate

Review comments at @connectors/hangingcontext/endpoints/topic/endpoint.test.ts:

the existing happy replay, and assert that the result has isProviderError set to
true and empty usage. Reuse the test’s existing fixture and replay setup where
applicable.
- Around line 12-17: Extend the runEndpoint tests to cover the topic schema
boundary: assert that a near-valid invalid slug is rejected with INVALID_INPUT
and that its valid near-twin succeeds against the compiled endpoint.
- Around line 6-7: Update liveSkip so an explicitly empty credential-field list
requires no credentials, while an omitted list retains the apiKey default; then
gate the topic live test with liveSkip("hangingcontext", []), preserving the
network-permission check and adding the required import.

Review comments at @connectors/hangingcontext/endpoints/topic/schema/inputs.ts:

any vendor-documented slug matching the lowercase alphanumeric-and-hyphen

Thanks for the review. Pushed a follow-up commit:

  • ask: query is optional in schema/inputs.ts (vendor mirror) and required at the binding with .required({ query: true }), since a bare call only returns a help page.
  • topic: uses the vendor's documented slug pattern ^[a-z0-9-]+$ instead of a fixed enum. The description still names today's topics.
  • Provider errors: synthetic 503 replays for ask and latest, and a recorded 404 for an unknown topic, all asserting isProviderError and empty usage. story already had a recorded 404.
  • Schema gates: INVALID_INPUT rejections plus passing near-twins for ask, topic and story.
  • story: added a live test.

On liveSkip: I left it alone. Hanging Context has no credential, so liveSkip("hangingcontext") would always skip, and liveSkip("hangingcontext", []) also always skips today, because envCredentialsPresent requires wanted.length > 0. Changing that would touch engine/, which a connector PR shouldn't. The live tests instead gate on network permission, so they run under test:live (--allow-net) and are ignored under test. If you'd rather make liveSkip(slug, []) mean "no credentials needed", I'm happy to send that as a separate PR.

deno test --allow-net connectors/hangingcontext: 17 passed.

Checked this against the replay code before changing anything (shared/testing/fixtures.ts, replayFetch). A shared provider-level chain cannot serve these endpoints: replay matches method and URL exactly after binding {{request.url}}, and that binding is the endpoint's compiled URL template.

  • 503 (ask, latest): latest works with {{request.url}}, but ask fails: call 0 expected GET https://hangingcontext.com/ask, engine issued GET https://hangingcontext.com/ask?query=anything. The query string is part of the match.
  • 404 (story, topic): both fail with the template unexpanded: expected GET https://hangingcontext.com/stories/{date}/{slug}/index.json, engine issued GET https://hangingcontext.com/stories/2026-01-01/no-such-story/index.json (and …/n/{topic}/index.json for topic).

Only latest has neither a query string nor path parameters, so a provider-level fixture would have one user and remove no duplication. Keeping the four per-endpoint fixtures with their literal URLs as they are. I ran both variants locally to confirm; the PR head is unchanged and the connector's tests pass on it (13 passed, 0 failed, 4 live tests skipped).
