Async safeStorage. The credential vault now checks availability with safeStorage.isAsyncEncryptionAvailable() instead of the sync isEncryptionAvailable(). That was the only sync safeStorage call left in the repo; grepping for safeStorage\.(isEncryptionAvailable|encryptString|decryptString)\( now finds nothing. Factory's old hub-key code went away when Factory was folded into desktop.
CredentialEncryption.available can now return a promise, and SecretVault.available() is async.
Its callers await it: Phaseo and Cursor sign-in in index.ts, MCP header secrets, and request_secret in workspaceRuntime.ts.
Capture sizes in pixels. Electron 46 marks capturePage() images with the page's scale factor, so getSize() and resize() work in DIPs there. A new capturePixels() helper reports pixel sizes, which is what the PNG has, for the browser capture, the element pick and the agent screenshot. It also keeps the agent screenshot's 1280 cap in pixels on HiDPI screens. On Electron 45 the scale is always 1, so nothing changes today.
Tests: capturePixels.test.ts, plus a secretVault case for an asynchronous availability check.
Changeset: @phaseo/desktop patch.
Why
Electron 45 deprecated the sync safeStorage API, and Electron 46 (from alpha.1, in https://github.com/electron/electron/pull/53662) removes it. The scale-factor change is also in 46's breaking-changes list, and handling it costs nothing on 45.
How
Stored credentials need no migration. Encryption and decryption already used encryptStringAsync / decryptStringAsync. Electron's docs say data written by encryptString decrypts with decryptStringAsync. Only the availability check changed.
Windows doesn't call it.windowsCredentialEncryption replaces the safeStorage availability check with its own DPAPI check, so the new async call only runs on macOS and Linux.
Sign-in check order.phaseoSignInStep now awaits availability before it reads the window and the open sign-in. Nothing awaits between the "already open" check and claiming the slot, so two sign-ins can't both get in.
Type narrowing.!this.vault || !await this.vault.available() keeps the narrowing that !this.vault?.available() used to give.

Electron version
45.0.0
45.0.0 (no bump)
Electron 46 risks checked (no upgrade in this PR)
From the 46.0 breaking-changes doc and the 46.0.0-alpha.1–3 release notes:
Removed sync safeStorage: fixed here.
Captured images carry the page's scale factor: handled here. The resize() math still needs checking on a real HiDPI screen under 46.
utilityProcesschild.kill() no longer force-kills: not affected. Desktop doesn't use utilityProcess; its kill() calls are on child_process children.
--no-stdio-init is ignored: not used.
document.requestStorageAccessFor is removed: not used.
unload handlers no longer run on http(s) pages: not used in our code. It only affects third-party pages in the in-app browser.
Sandboxed preload shims (already on 45): already handled by #3381.
Left for the upgrade (also posted on PHA-564):
decryptStringAsync returns shouldReEncrypt, and we ignore it. If 46's async backend rotates keys, stored credentials should be re-encrypted on read. This only matters on macOS and Linux, plus legacy Windows values. It needs a design choice about the cache in SecretVault, so it isn't in this PR.
Recheck the CDP device-emulation workaround on 46, and rerun the 96-case viewport audit.
Pick the newest 46.x that passes the 7-day minimumReleaseAge, then smoke-test a packaged electron-forge make build (CI doesn't run it).
Electron 47 (planned) removes the positional console-message arguments. Desktop doesn't use them.
Verification
Run in apps/desktop on Windows, Electron 45.0.0:
pnpm run typecheck: pass. This needed pnpm --filter "@phaseo/agent-sdk..." build first.
pnpm run test:browser-viewport: NATIVE_VIEWPORT_GEOMETRY {"cases":96,"failed":[]}
env -u ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE pnpm run test:desktop (smoke.mjs):
On this branch it failed twice at the managed-worktree step on the script's hard 45 s deadline ("Desktop smoke timed out").
With origin/main's apps/desktop/src it failed earlier, with the known "database is locked".
With the deadline raised to 180 s locally (not committed), the branch passes the whole smoke in 94 s, ending in DESKTOP_SMOKE {... "renderer":true, "git":true ...}.

Review comments at @apps/desktop/src/main/browserAgent.ts:
- Line 173: In the image-resizing branch, preserve the capture scale factor when
encoding the resized image. Update the `toPNG()` call to receive the scale
factor from `image.getScaleFactors()` (defaulting to 1), while keeping the
resized width capped at 1280 pixels.
Review comments at @apps/desktop/src/main/index.ts:
- Line 211: Update phaseoSignInStep to register its AbortController before
awaiting credentialVault.available(), so cancellation can reach the in-progress
sign-in. After availability resolves, reject unavailable credentials and check
for an aborted signal or shutdown before calling step; retain the existing
cleanup behavior.
- Line 1102: Update the credential flow around answerSecret so a rejection from
vault.set during async encryption is caught and the submitted request is settled
consistently rather than left pending. Do not treat
safeStorage.isAsyncEncryptionAvailable() in the available check as proof that
encryption will succeed; handle the actual encryption failure in the request
flow.

Walkthrough
The desktop main process now reads screenshot dimensions from PNG data and resizes oversized browser screenshots. Credential storage availability checks now support asynchronous results, and affected callers await those results.
Changes: Screenshot Pixel Dimensions
Layer / File(s)
Summary
PNG dimension parsing and tests apps/desktop/src/main/capturePixels.ts, apps/desktop/src/main/capturePixels.test.ts
pngPixels reads width and height from PNG IHDR bytes. Tests cover valid dimensions and buffers that produce zero dimensions.
Screenshot capture and returned dimensions apps/desktop/src/main/browserAgent.ts, apps/desktop/src/main/browserHost.ts, .changeset/desktop-async-safestorage.md
Browser screenshots resize when PNG pixel width exceeds 1280, using the first capture scale factor or 1. Browser capture and pick paths derive dimensions from PNG data. The changeset announces the screenshot and storage updates.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review c30fc
Credential handling changes in this PR. If macOS Keychain access is denied, submitting a requested secret can leave the request hanging. A sign-in canceled while storage availability is being checked can still proceed. Fix both before merging. The screenshot resizing concern only matters after the Electron 46 upgrade.
