Does this block you from using Warp daily?
No
Is this an issue only in Warp?
Yes, I confirmed that this only happens in Warp, not other terminals.

Here's what I found while triaging this issue:
The screenshot confirms Warp is trying to start PowerShell Core through the WindowsApps pwsh.exe path and Windows rejects that process launch before the shell starts. This looks Windows environment/path-selection sensitive; redacted logs and the local pwsh resolution order are needed to confirm why the non-Store PowerShell install is not being used.
I have a few follow-up questions before I can narrow this down:
- Can you attach redacted Warp logs from immediately after this banner appears, especially any shell selection or PTY spawn lines?
- From another terminal, what is the redacted output of
where.exe pwsh, and which exact non-Storepwsh.exepath do you expect Warp to use?
Reply in-thread with those details and the triage workflow will automatically re-evaluate the issue and update the diagnosis, labels, and next steps.
Maintainer details
I concluded that windows PowerShell Core sessions fail to start because Warp is launching the WindowsApps pwsh.exe path and Windows rejects the PTY child process creation with 0x80070542..
Triage summary
This is a Windows shell-startup bug affecting PowerShell Core sessions. The screenshot shows Warp attempting to launch C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\pwsh.exe and the Windows PTY spawn path failing with 0x80070542 (Either a required impersonation level was not provided, or the provided impersonation level is invalid).
The report is likely a regression despite the template's Regression: No selection: the issue body lists a recent working date of 2026-10-19, and the triggering follow-up says it was working before. That justifies keeping this high priority.
Likely root cause
The most plausible current-code path is:
crates/warp_util/src/path/windows.rsincludes%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\WindowsAppsin the PowerShell 7 search paths.app/src/terminal/available_shells.rsandcrates/warp_terminal/src/local_tty/shell.rsconvert the resolvedpwsh.exeinto a direct PowerShell shell starter.crates/warp_terminal/src/local_tty/windows/mod.rspasses that command toCreateProcessWwith ConPTY startup attributes.app/src/terminal/view/shell_terminated_banner.rssurfaces the resultingCreateShellProcessFailederror as the redShell process could not start!banner.
The remaining ambiguity is why the user's non-Store PowerShell 7 install is not being selected over the WindowsApps alias, or whether a persisted shell setting still points at the alias.
Duplicate check
I checked all open issues via the GitHub API. #6165 is a broad Windows shell-process creation failure, and #12871 involves a persisted WindowsApps pwsh.exe path, but I did not find two existing open issues matching this exact 0x80070542 impersonation failure. This should not be marked duplicate yet.
Needed from reporter
The next useful evidence is the exact local pwsh resolution order and Warp logs from a failed launch, so maintainers can tell whether this is shell discovery, persisted settings, or a Windows app-execution-alias launch-context failure.
Question reasoning
- Can you attach redacted Warp logs from immediately after this banner appears, especially any shell selection or PTY spawn lines? — The logs are needed to confirm whether Warp chose the WindowsApps alias from shell discovery, from a persisted shell preference, or from another launch path.
- From another terminal, what is the redacted output of
where.exe pwsh, and which exact non-Storepwsh.exepath do you expect Warp to use? — This user-specific PATH/order information is needed because the screenshot shows Warp using the WindowsApps alias even though the reporter says non-Store PowerShell 7 is installed.
This is my automated analysis and may be incorrect. A maintainer will verify the details.

Used the below process and it has been fixed post this .
Fix steps (Windows)
- Quit Warp completely — right-click the Warp icon in the system tray → Quit, and confirm warp.exe is not running in Task Manager.
- Open a regular PowerShell window (Windows Terminal or Start menu → PowerShell — not Warp, since Warp can't start its shell).
- Back up the data folder first (safety, in case you want to roll back): Copy-Item "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\warp\Warp\data" "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\warp\Warp\data-backup" -Recurse -Force
Delete the stale user state files (the exact command you used, without any date filter): Remove-Item -Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\warp\Warp\data*-User" -Recurse -Force
- Launch Warp — it will start logged out. Sign in again.
- The shell should now start normally.
This issue appears to overlap with existing issues:
- #16567 — I am noticing that the whenever I open a warp session, the terminal stuck at "starting windows powershell"
- #15784 — All tabs are hung with "Starting {Shell Name}"
If this report is meaningfully different, please comment with the additional context or distinguishing behavior so a maintainer can review it. Otherwise, a maintainer may close it as a duplicate after review.
Maintainer details
I concluded that windows Warp stable can fail to start the shell core when opening terminal or agent windows after restart, and the reporter later restored startup by deleting stale local *-User state files..
Duplicate reasoning
- #16567: Same reporter, Windows platform, same Warp stable release family, and the same terminal/session startup failure when opening a Warp session.
- #15784: Also reports Windows Warp sessions where local shells do not start and remain stuck in the shell-startup state, matching the core failure surface.
This is my automated analysis and may be incorrect. A maintainer will verify the details.

Here's what I found while triaging this issue:
The screenshot points to Windows failing to launch PowerShell Core from
AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\pwsh.exe. As a workaround, try setting Warp's default shell to Windows PowerShell (powershell.exe) or installing PowerShell 7 via the MSI sopwsh.exeresolves outsideWindowsApps.I have a few follow-up questions before I can narrow this down:
powershell.exe) or a non-Store PowerShell 7 install avoid the error?Reply in-thread with those details and the triage workflow will automatically re-evaluate the issue and update the diagnosis, labels, and next steps.
Maintainer details
I concluded that windows Warp sessions fail to start because PowerShell Core is being launched from the WindowsApps app-execution alias and
CreateProcessWreturns0x80070542..Triage summary
This is a Windows shell startup failure. The screenshot shows Warp's PTY spawn banner with:
Shell process could not start!Failed to create shell process C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\pwsh.exe0x80070542/Either a required impersonation level was not provided, or the provided impersonation level is invalid. The most likely area is Windows shell discovery/spawn for PowerShell Core.
crates/warp_util/src/path/windows.rscan discover PowerShell 7 via the per-userMicrosoft\WindowsAppsapp-execution alias, andcrates/warp_terminal/src/local_tty/windows/mod.rsthen passes the selected shell command intoCreateProcessWfor the ConPTY-backed session. This looks consistent with a packaged/MSIX PowerShell alias failing when spawned as Warp's shell process.I found one loosely related open Windows shell-start failure (#6165), but not two likely duplicates with this exact
0x80070542/WindowsApps PowerShell failure, so I am not marking this as a duplicate. The report also has conflicting regression signals: the selected regression answer says this has existed throughout the reporter's Warp usage, but the
Recent working Warp datefield is filled in as19-10-2026. Because this may indicate a recent breakage in a core shell-start path, I am requestingagent:priority-highuntil that is clarified.Question reasoning
